2nd Life by Tradingzone

This means high-quality used furniture at attractive terms for purchase or rent, a significantly lower carbon footprint, and all-around excellent service.

Tradingzone is more than just a business model

There was a time before Tradingzone. Back then, the company’s three founders were hired to haul away furniture during moves and site closures.

This furniture had one destination: the nearest disposal site. Before 2006, small trucks full of furniture were simply destroyed. After just a few weeks, it became clear to the company’s founders: It doesn’t have to be this way, it shouldn’t be this way, it mustn’t be this way! Why should good office furniture simply be thrown away? Office furniture, in particular, is durable, sturdy, and can usually be used for more than 10 years. That would also be much more cost-effective for companies! A goal was born: to give every piece of used office furniture a new purpose, if possible.  Of course, only after appropriate quality control by experts.

What if the quality isn't up to par anymore?

Our warehousing and logistics experts disassemble office furniture that is no longer needed into its individual components and send them to our partner companies for proper recycling. For example, wood waste is turned into pellets, which we then use to heat our buildings.

Our Contribution to the Environment

Transport Optimization

Logistics—complex and indispensable—is amajor source of CO2 emissions for many retail companies.The top priority here is: no detours, no empty runs. ;

Customers who do not select a preferred delivery date in the store will receive flexible delivery. This allows for flexibility in planning and ensures maximum utilization of our delivery fleet. Thanks to the experience of one of Switzerland’s largest logistics companies, we can draw on additional expertise in logistics management.

Energy Savings in New Construction

Every company faces conflicting priorities during the fiscal year. For us, the need to ensure continuous product availability results in increased warehousing requirements. In response to our growing customer base, a warehouse was built in Regensdorf in 2016. The building   meets modern construction standards   and has been self-sufficient in energy for its most critical functions since 2020 and in heat since it was built.

Photovoltaics

Since 2020, all the electricity for the electric vehicle fleet and operations has been generated in-house using solar energy. The previous, unkempt green roof had to be removed. The   photovoltaic system generates up to 430 kWp of solar power and could supply up to 100 single-family homes with electricity  . A small step, yet another milestone for Tradingzone AG

LED Lighting with Sensors

In Regensdorf, we installed LED lighting throughout the entire building. Most of the lights are equipped with motion sensors, so they only turn on when someone is actually in the room. This is both practical and environmentally friendly in larger spaces.

Circular Economy in Practice: Data from Over 120 Office Projects

For Tradingzone, the circular economy is not just a theoretical concept, but a practice put into action. An internal analysis of more than 120 office reorganizations per year shows the actual impact of reusing office furniture.

As part of these projects, approximately 20,000 pieces of furniture are collected, inspected, refurbished, and put back into use each year. The analysis shows that approximately 93% of the collected furniture can be reused. Only about 7% must be properly recycled or disposed of. This systematic reuse saves significant resources every year.

The documented effect:

  • about 700 metric tons of material saved per year
  • Over 1,600 metric tons of CO₂ emissions avoided annually

The calculation is based on an average furniture weight of 35 kg and conservative emission figures of 80 kg of CO₂ per newly manufactured piece of furniture. These figures show that the circular economy in the office furniture sector is already having a measurable environmental impact.

Why Office Furniture Ends Up in the Recycling Stream in the First Place

Most office furniture is not replaced because it is technically defective. In practice, such projects usually arise due to:

  • Area Consolidations
  • Site Consolidations
  • organizational changes
  • economic adjustments

Office furniture is therefore often removed from functional work environments—even though it remains fully usable. This is precisely where the greatest potential of the circular economy lies: in the intelligent reuse of existing resources.

Why Used Brand-Name Furniture Is High-Quality

For many brand-name manufacturers, durability is often built right into the design: robust mechanics, high-quality materials, and a construction designed to be repaired rather than thrown away. Swiss manufacturers in particular, such as Vitra and Lista LO, have stood for this durability for generations. Then there’s the style: Many of these brands focus on minimalist, clean lines rather than fleeting trends, ensuring that their pieces still fit into modern offices years later. USM, for example, is known for its modular system, in which modules from decades ago can still be combined with new ones today.

Furniture like this provides a solid foundation for the circular economy: It retains its value over multiple cycles of use and can still be repaired and refurbished even after many years, as is the case with our refurbished Giroflex 64 chairs: Only the upholstery was worn out; the frame itself was far from reaching the end of its useful life. That’s why replacing the upholstery and installing a new gas spring was a much better option than disposing of the piece. This is exactly what makes brands like USM and Giroflex a particularly worthwhile choice in the circular economy: it is their design that makes refurbishment like this possible in the first place, rather than simply discarding items that are still in good condition.

Second Life Instead of Prejudice.

New Approaches to Office Furnishings: Sustainable, Circular, and Future-Ready

In times of scarce resources, stricter environmental regulations, and a growing awareness of sustainability, we believe New Office Furniture: not as a one-time purchase, but as a continuous cycle. At Tradingzone, we offer sustainable office furniture as part of the circular economy —from planning through use to recycling. Our vision: to design work environments that retain their value over the long term, conserve resources, and strengthen companies both economically and ecologically.

What does the circular economy mean in the office furniture sector?

The circular economy relies on closed material and product cycles, as opposed to the linear model of “manufacture, use, dispose.” (FOEN)

In the furniture industry, this means, specifically:

  • Design products so that they are repairable, disassemblable, and modular
  • Select materials that are recyclable or reusable
  • Prioritize durability and reusability
  • Establish Take-Back and Refurbishment Systems

Ideally, furniture is refurbished after its initial use and reintroduced to the market, or individual components are used as secondary raw materials. (Swiss Recycling)

Why Sustainable Office Furniture and the Circular Economy Are Especially Relevant Today

Environmental Pressure and Regulation

The political landscape in Switzerland and Europe is becoming more challenging. Companies are increasingly being evaluated based on resource efficiency and circularity—whether in public tenders or in relation to ESG criteria. (KOF Institute)

Life-Cycle Cost-Effectiveness

Sustainable furniture pays for itself through lower replacement costs, repairability, and recyclability—especially in large facilities that frequently require renovations.

Image and Competitive Advantage

Companies that opt for eco-friendly office furniture strengthen their brand image, attract environmentally conscious customers and employees, and meet increasing CSR requirements.

Potential for Innovation and Future Growth

Switzerland is currently in the process of transitioning to a circular economy—many companies are implementing strategic approaches, but only a few have fully established them. (The Economy) Those who invest early secure market leadership.

Our Strategy: The Circular Economy in Practice at Tradingzone

1. Planning with a Long-Term Perspective

From the very beginning, we advise you on choosing furniture that is modular, repairable, and made from sustainable materials. This way, we minimize waste right from the design phase.

2. Flexible usage models

Standard solutions such as rental, leasing, or Furniture-as-a-Service complement the traditional purchase. This way, the owner remains interested in the material value and ensures reuse. (fenyx-office.com)

3. Refurbishing & Second Life

Furniture is not discarded, but rather professionally refurbished, reupholstered, or modified—and then reintroduced into the usage cycle. This results in high-quality Second Life office furniture with a reduced carbon footprint.

4. Take-Back & Material Recycling

We offer take-back programs—used furniture is analyzed, and parts are recycled or reused. Materials are returned as secondary raw materials.

5. Transparency & Documentation

With digital product passports (material origin, repair history, etc.), we build trust and ensure traceability—a key component of modern circular economy solutions. (circular-economy-switzerland.ch)

Circular Economy for Sustainable Office Furniture – Rethinking Office Furnishings with Tradingzone

Sustainable Design, Shaping the Future

At a time when resource scarcity, climate goals, and new ways of working are shaping everyday office life, Tradingzone is consistently reimagining office furnishings. Since 2007, as a Swiss specialist in sustainable office furniture and the circular economy, we have been committed to giving high-quality furniture a second life and thereby making a genuine ecological contribution.

This furniture is refurbished, reused, and returned to the cycle of use. Swiss SMEs, startups, private individuals, and large corporations all benefit equally from this.

Circular Economy in the Office Furniture Sector – Tradingzone Has Been a Pioneer Since 2007

The circular economy replaces the outdated linear model of “manufacture—use—dispose” with closed material and product cycles.

In the office furniture sector, this means:

  • Furniture is designed to be modular, repairable, and recyclable
  • Materials are used for as long as possible and reused multiple times
  • Existing furniture is professionally refurbished and given a “second life”

This is exactly where Tradingzone comes in: Since 2007, we have specialized in developing sustainable and economically viable solutions for office furnishings. Thanks to our in-house workshops, proven logistics, and a broad network, we’re able to systematically collect, refurbish, and recirculate furniture—efficiently, in a resource-conserving manner, and with a measurable impact.

Why Sustainable Office Furniture Is Essential Today—and How Tradingzone Can Help

Companies are under increasing pressure to design their office spaces to be environmentally friendly, flexible, and cost-effective. Regulatory requirements, rising raw material prices, and ESG criteria make sustainable solutions a strategic necessity.

For over 17 years, Tradingzone has been helping small and medium-sized businesses, large corporations, public institutions, startups, and individuals overcome this challenge in a practical way:

  • Environmental: We reduce waste and CO₂ emissions through reuse and refurbishment.
  • Economically: Second-life furniture is durable and significantly more cost-effective than buying new.
  • Strategically: Sustainability strengthens brand image, employer appeal, and competitiveness.

3. Refurbishing & Second Life

Every day, our experts refurbish furniture—from ergonomic office chairs to complete workstation systems. The result is “second-life” office furniture that offers impressive quality and conserves resources.

4. Take-Back & Recycling

Tradingzone systematically organizes take-backs, analyzes furniture for reusability, and returns valuable materials to the cycle.
